Influence of Elderly Cohabitation with Children on Successful Aging ? with Focus upon the Moderating Effect of Gender
Park Kyung-Sook

Abstract
As the Korean society ages faster, there is growing concern for care of the elderly. An accurate understanding of family factors and role of gender and their influence on successful aging is required in order to develop appropriate community care policies. The purpose of this study was to better understand the influence of the elderly cohabitation with children on successful aging, with specific focus upon the moderating effect of gender. From the 2017 National Social Survey for the Elderly, 10,017 elderly who cohabited with their children were analyzed. The overall results of regression analysis showed that cohabitation and gender separately did not have significant influences on successful aging, but there was a significant moderating effect of gender. For elderly women, cohabitation negatively affected successful aging, but for elderly men, cohabitation did not affect it significantly. The significant variables affecting the three dimensions of successful aging differed. Gender, and interaction of cohabitation and gender had significant influence on physical health while only gender had significant influence on active social participation. This result suggests that we need to consider gender perspective when we try to understand the relationship between cohabitation with children and successful aging. It suggested that promoting cohabitation would not necessarily be a desirable policy option. As such, the various family policies which can enhance cohabitating elderly women¡¯s physical health must be further developed for multi-generational families if Korean society wants to promote cohabitation in the future.
